Darryl is a professional town planner, Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia and Fellow of the Environmental Institute of Australia and
New Zealand. He is Professor Emeritus (Environmental and Landscape Planning) and former Head of Planning at Griffith University. He was a Visiting Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and now a Fellow of the CASs President’s International Fellowship Initiative. He is a retired Major General who commenced his military career as an Army cadet before enlisting as a Private and rising to the rank of Major General.

He has 50 years experience in private consulting practice, applied research, specialist consulting and teaching in the fields of urban and regional planning, environmental and landscape planning and natural resource management. His research has focused on collaborative regional and coastal planning; growth management for developing regions; values led planning and indigenous landscape values; resilience and peri-urbanisation of the landscape; climate change adaptation for human settlements, planning for natural resource management and invasive species management; planning for water sensitive city-regions; regional landscape and open space management; strategic post disaster recovery; community led planning; plan/policy implementation and adaptive management; scenario planning and the relationship between science and planning.

He has served on numerous boards, commissions, advisory committees, task forces, expert think tanks, expert panels at state and federal government levels in the fields of planning, natural resource management, coastal management, open space, climate change adaptation and indigenous engagement.
